MADISON, Wis. -- On Day 1 of the 54-hole Badger Invitational, Sunday, the Wisconsin men's golf team recorded a 14-over 302 to place the Badgers in 10th.
UW is just one shot from Western Carolina in ninth and two strokes off eighth-place USC Upstate in the 12-team field.
Miami (OH) leads the way after shooting a 10-under 278 and second-place Kansas (-5, 283) was the lone other team to shoot under par. The RedHawks first-round team score marked a new Badger Invitational 18-hole record, which replaced Toledo and Arkansas Little Rock's 290 set on Sept. 8, 2001. Ball State (+1, 289), No. 40 Illinois State (+7, 295) and Rutgers (+8, 296) round out the top five.
All five Badgers participating in team play shot within three strokes of one another.
Matt Ross (74) was the team's best performer at 2-over, while Ben Skogen (75) and Tommy Schofield (76) were close behind at 3- and 4-over, respectively. Ross sits in a tie for 23rd, followed by Skogen knotted in 31st and Schofield tied for 39th.
Eddie Wajda III and Brett Robinson shot identical first rounds at a 5-over 77. The pair is tied for 50th entering Day 2.
Among the Badgers' individual competitors, Michael Abrahamson and Jordan Hahn separated themselves as contenders. Abrahamson, who is tied for 10th overall, scored a 1-under 71, while Hahn is tied for 12th at an even 72. The duo is three and four shots off the lead with two rounds to go, Monday and Tuesday.
Johnny Decker wrapped up Wisconsin's individual scoring, as the sophomore put up a 7-over 79. He is tied for 65th.
Tee times begin at 9 a.m off holes 1 and 10 on Monday, while Tuesday's third round will be a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Admission and parking to the event are free.
