MADISON, Wis. - Improving on its first-round score from Sunday, the Wisconsin men's golf team registered a 6-over 294, Monday, in the second round of the 54-hole Badger Invitational at University Ridge.
The Badgers (302-294=596) moved up six spots to fourth after placing 10th on Day 1. The team posted the third-lowest second-round score, trailing Kansas's 2-under 286 and Miami (OH)'s 2-over 290.
Miami (OH) (-8, 278-290=568) held onto its lead on Monday, as did Kansas (-7, 283-286=569) in second and Ball State (+9, 289-296=585) in third. USC Upstate (+21, 200-297=597), which jumped three places in the second round, rounded out the top five.
Jordan Hahn (72-68=140), who is leading the individual competition, remained among the entire tournament's top golfers, as he went from even par to 4-under with a UW career-best score of 68 on Monday. The freshman's day was highlighted by an eagle on the 16th hole.
He is in a tie for third and four shots off Patrick Flavin (-8, 68-68=136) of Miami (OH) in first. Flavin's 36-hole score ranks second all-time at the Badger Invitational and is fifth-best among University Ridge's men's collegiate records.
Hahn's 18-hole score was a 2015-16 team best and his 36-hole mark tied Ben Skogen's 140 from the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic, Sept. 21-22, for the lowest score so far this season.
Another Wisconsin individual competitor in the hunt for the lead at the Badger Invitational is Michael Abrahamson. After going 1-under on Monday, he posted a 2-under 70 in the second round to give him a 36-hole score of 3-under 71-70=141. Abrahamson is close behind Hahn in a tie for fifth overall and second to his teammate among the individual competitors.
Johnny Decker (79-73=152) was UW's third individual golfer at a 1-over 73 for the day. After recording a 7-over 79 on Monday, the Verona, Wisconsin, native is tied for 42nd entering the final round.
Matt Ross paced Wisconsin's improvement in the team scoring on Day 2, shooting an even 72 to keep him at 2-over 74-72=146. The senior is tied with two others in 13th.
Skogen (75-73=148) is not far off Ross tied for 18th, as he went 1-over, which put him at 4-over for the tournament.
Tommy Schofield (76-75=151) and Eddie Wajda III (77-74=151) are knotted in 31st at 7-over through two days of competition.
Brett Robinson (77-79=156) finished up the team scoring on Monday with a 7-over 79. The freshman is now 12-over, sitting in a tie for 58th.
In all, seven of eight Badgers golfers performed better from the first to second round.
Tuesday's third round is a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Admission and parking to the event are free.
