Wisconsin moves to 2-0 with 5-2 win over in-state rival Marquette

MADISON, Wis. – With the ITA National Indoor Championships less than a week away, the Badgers can go into it with some momentum after knocking off in-state rival Marquette, 5-2, Sunday afternoon. On the heels of knocking off No. 44 Houston on Friday, the Badgers advance to 2-0 on the season.

The Badgers got off to a hot start by sweeping the doubles matches to pick up the doubles point. Lauren Chypyha and Kendall Kirsch teamed up to take down Silvia Ambrosio and Erin Gebes, 7-5. The duo of Ekaterina Stepanova and Sydney Rider knocked off Diana Tokar and Leoni Daems, 6-3. Finally, Lauren Burich and Kelsey Grambeau paired up to defeat Aleeza Kanner and Paula Tormos Sanchez, 6-3.

On the singles courts Chypyha, knocked off Silvia Ambrosio, 6-3, 6-3. Today's victory for Chypyha marks the 83rd of her career, good for sole possession of 10th on UW's all-time wins list.

Stepanova backed up her impressive win on Friday by once again making quick work of Erin Gebes, 6-1, 6-1. Also picking up a victory for the Badgers was Lauren Burich, who came back from a first-set loss to knock off Courtney Hebard, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Kirsch also battled back from a tough first set to seal the deal for the Badgers by taking down Diana Tokar, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.

"I'm always happy to beat an in-state rival," Samara added. "I knew coming into today's match it wouldn't be easy as Marquette always battles. It was important for us to get that doubles point. Early on (in singles) we lost some first sets but I'm happy we were able to turn around and win two thirds of them."

With Sunday's win, the Badgers moved to 25-4 all-time against Marquette.

Next up for the Badgers is the prestigious ITA National Indoor Championships, which they are hosting and is set to begin on Friday, Feb. 5, and conclude on Feb. 8. The nation's top 16 teams will descend on Madison for the four-day tournament. The official bracket and match times will be announced this week. Admission is free for the public.
