UW tied for 18th
HANAHAN, S.C. -- Up against a crowded field at the prestigious Yeamans Hall Club, the Wisconsin women's golf team sits in a tie for 18th place after the first round of the Cougar Classic. Â
Â
The Badgers finished the day at 13-over (301) to tie with Indiana out of the 21-field team.
Â
After shooting a 2-over 74, sophomore Nat Zeng is tied for 51st place and leads the Badgers. One stroke behind are senior Brooke Ferrell and junior Becky Klongland, who are both tied for 72nd place. Junior Gabby Curtis registered a 5-over 77 to be tied for 88th, while sophomore Jessica Reinecke sits in a tie for 101st place after netting a 7-over 79.
Â
"Difficult day for us," UW head coach Todd Oehrlein said. "We need to execute better in certain situations tomorrow. We didn't take advantage of the par 5's today and we will need to do a better job of that in rounds 2 and 3."
Â
Just six strokes separate the top five teams. Furman leads at 10-under, while North Carolina finished the day at 7-under and Wake Forest finished one stroke behind. Both Auburn and UCF finished at 4-under to tie for fourth place. North Carolina State (285), Michigan (285), Florida State (286), South Carolina (288) and Louisville (289) rounded out the top 10.
Â
Penn State and Chattanooga both finished 3-over to sit in 11th place. Maryland (292) sits in 13th place at 4-over while both Clemson (293) and Arkansas (293) ended the first round at 5-over to tie for 14th. At 10-over, Mississippi State (296) is in 16th place and Charleston Southern (298) finished three strokes ahead of UW to claim 17th.
Â
The second round of the Cougar Classic tees off on Monday at 7 a.m. and Tuesday's final round will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com.
