2015 champion Ferrell hopes to reclaim tournament title
Simpsonville, Ky. – The Wisconsin women's golf team wraps up its fall season at the Cardinal Cup on Oct. 23-25 as the Badgers travel to Simpsonville, Kentucky.
Hosted by the University of Louisville, the 54-hole tournament will be played at the par-72, 6,393-yard University of Louisville Golf Club.
The No. 42 Badgers will take on five other top-50 teams according to Golftstat rankings. The field includes Ball State, Bradley, Cincinnati, Columbia, No. 33 East Carolina, No. 7 Florida State, No. 22 Illinois, Kansas, No. 48 Kentucky, No. 50 Louisville, Maryland, Middle Tennessee State, Minnesota, Richmond and Virginia Tech.
Brooke Ferrell, Michelle Cheung, Gabby Curtis, Becky Klongland, Ali Nageotte and Nat Zeng will represent Wisconsin.
Last season, the Badgers left the Cardinal Cup with plenty to be happy about. Ferrell (66-74-73=213) matched the best 54-hole score in school history to take home a share of the tournament title and mark the first individual Badger tournament champion since 2013. UW also collected its best tournament finish of the season by placing fourth overall.
Last time out, the Badgers clawed their way up the leaderboard to finish 12th at the Cougar Classic. Ferrell finished tied for 27th to lead the Badgers, while Zeng matched her career 54-hole low of 221 to tie for 50th. Both Klongland and Curtis shot their lowest rounds of the tournament on the final day to move into a tie for 81st and 83rd, respectively.
The Cardinal Cup marks Cheung's first collegiate competition of the season after kicking off her senior campaign at the World Amateur Team Championships in Riviera Maya, Mexico, as a member of team Hong Kong. Cheung finished 25-over to help her team to a tie for 34th place. Last season, Cheung collected three top-25 finishes and her 74.97 scoring average tied for sixth-best in school history.
The 2016 Cardinal Cup tees off Sunday at 9:00 a.m. and Tuesday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com.
