UW sits in second, just four strokes off lead
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. -- With senior Brooke Ferrell leading the tournament and the Badgers just four strokes off the lead, the Wisconsin women's golf team took advantage of the second round of the Cardinal Cup to set itself up in perfect position entering the final round at the University of Louisville Golf Club.
Ferrell (75-68=143) shot a 4-under 68 to move into first place on the players' leaderboard. The Edgerton, Wisconsin, native looks to reclaim her title after taking home the tournament crown last year and registering a 3-under 213 to tie for the third-best 54-hole scorecard in Wisconsin history. Ferrell is one stroke ahead of Morgane Metraux (73-21=144) of Florida State and three ahead of Kentucky's Jordan Chael (71-75=146).
"Brooke played really well and we're excited for her, but really we were just very balanced all around again," UW head coach Todd Oehrlein said. "We played very solid all day even though the golf course was still pretty difficult today, but we were pretty sharp and never lost our composure."
The Badgers (+21, 303-294=597) shaved nine strokes off their first round total to jump up one spot on the team leaderboard. At 17-over, Florida State leads by four strokes while Kentucky (+27), Illinois (+28), Louisville (+37) and East Carolina (+37) round out the top five.
A total of four Badgers sit in the top-30. Junior Becky Klongland (77-75=152) shot a 3-over 75 to move into a tie for 14th place while sophomore Nat Zeng's 6-over 78 put her in a tie for 21st. Fellow junior Gabby Curtis (76-78=154) also registered a 6-over 78 to be tied for 26th place.
Senior Michelle Cheung (84-73=157) rebounded from a rough first round by registering a 1-over 73 to jump 32 spots up the leaderboard and sit in a tie for 45th place.
Junior Ali Nageotte (83-80=163), who is competing as an individual, improved upon yesterday's round by firing off an 8-over 80 to be tied for 75th place.
Virginia Tech (+38), Maryland (+44), Cincinnati (+47) and Columbia (+47) complete the top ten of the 17-team field.
Tuesday's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com.
"We're excited and looking forward to tomorrow," Oehrlein said. "It's a great opportunity and it would be a great way to finish off the fall. We just keep getting better and that's what you look for, just trying to get at least a little bit better every day. They played really well in the first two rounds to put themselves in a great position."
