Third POW honor for Wisconsin’s leading scorer
MADISON, Wis. – Senior Brooke Ferrell earned her third career Big Ten Conference Golfer of the Week honor after winning the Cardinal Cup in Simpsonville, Kentucky, Oct. 23-25.
The Edgerton, Wisconsin, native led the tournament entering the final round and sealed the victory in thrilling fashion after making birdie on the final hole. Ferrell (75-68-71=214) finished the tournament at 2-under to pick up her best 54-hole total of the season. After shooting a 3-over 75 in the opening round, Ferrell fired off a 4-under 68 in the second round to claim first place on the leaderboard and her 1-under 71 to close out the tournament was enough to give her the title.
The win marked Ferrell's first solo tournament title of her career after tying for first at the 2016 Westbrook Invitational and 2015 Cardinal Cup. Ferrell's two previous Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors also came after last season's tournament titles.
For the third consecutive year, Ferrell leads the Badgers in scoring. This season, Ferrell is averaging 72.3 strokes per round and has finished as Wisconsin's top golfer in three out of four tournaments.
As a junior, Ferrell earned All-Big Ten first team honors and registered the best season scoring average in Wisconsin history with 73.25 strokes per round, which marked the only time a Badger has ended a campaign with an average below 74. Ferrell also finished third at the Big Ten Championships with a school record 209 before ending in a tie for 59th at the NCAA Regional.
With the fall season now in the books, the Badgers return to the links to compete in the UCF Challenge at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Florida, from Feb. 5-7.
