Sophomore forward’s five-point weekend propels him to second career weekly award
MADISON, Wis. – For the third time this season, Wisconsin men's hockey has a player on the Big Ten Stars of the Week list. This week, captain Luke Kunin was recognized as the conference's second star after scoring three goals and adding two assists over the weekend against St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
The previous two Badgers recognized were defenseman Corbin McGuire and forward Trent Frederic.
Kunin, a native of Chesterfield, Missouri, scored two goals in Friday night's 5-2 victory over No. 18 St. Lawrence and contributed a goal and two assists in the Badgers' 5-4 victory against Clarkson on Saturday.
Kunin's performance was largely aided by his linemates, including Grant Besse, who also posted a five-point weekend (1 goal, 4 assists), and Cameron Hughes (2 assists).
The prolific weekend for Kunin moved him into a tie with McGuire for the team lead in goals with four through six games and fourth on the team in points with seven, sitting only behind Besse, Seamus Malone and Frederic. Kunin scored the opening goal for the Badgers to tie the game at 1-1 against St. Lawrence and then sealed the victory over the Saints with an empty-net goal to make it 5-2 UW. He also set up Besse's game-winning goal against Clarkson, just 15 seconds into the third period. Â Â
Kunin was drafted 15th overall by the Minnesota Wild in the 2016 NHL entry draft.
Ohio State's Matthew Weis was this week's first star, while the Buckeye's defenseman Tommy Parran earned third-star honors.
The Badgers return home this weekend to take on the Northern Michigan Wildcats. The two teams already faced each other twice this year in the opening weekend, with each team earning a victory in the two-game series. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. CT on Friday and Saturday and will be available for streaming on BTN Plus and radio broadcast on WIBA-AM 1310.
