Badgers drop season opener to Charlotte

McMorris paces UW with 13 points
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Wisconsin women's basketball team fell to Charlotte, 63-45, on Friday in the Badgers' first game under new head coach Jonathan Tsipis. Junior guard Cayla McMorris led the Badgers with 13 points, but UW struggled from the field, connecting on just 23.8 percent (15-of-63) of its shots.
Wisconsin started quickly, jumping out to a 6-1 lead three minutes into the game. The 49ers responded with a 15-6 run to lead 16-12 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Badgers made just one of its 14 shots and scored just eight points as Charlotte extended its lead to 35-20 at halftime.
In the first half, Wisconsin made just 5-of-33 shots (15.2%) and turned the ball over 13 times.
Charlotte opened up as much as an 18-point lead, 40-22, in the third quarter before the Badgers mustered a bit of a comeback. A 12-3 UW run, punctuated by a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Roichelle Marble, brought the Badgers within nine (43-34) with 3:06 left in the third.
Wisconsin stayed within striking distance and sophomore forward Marsha Howard's jumper cut the Charlotte lead to 51-43 with 7:01 left in the game. The 49ers scored the next 12 points however, as UW endured a nearly 5-minute scoring drought.
In all, 12 Badgers saw action. In addition to McMorris' 13 points, freshman forward Courtney Fredrickson scored seven points in her UW debut and senior Avyanna Young chipped in with six points and seven rebounds. After missing all of last season with a knee injury, junior Malayna Johnson pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
