
Hutchins earns second All-America honor of week

Junior resets school record en route to bronze medal
ATLANTA – One All-America accolade already secured, junior Matt Hutchins of the Wisconsin men's swimming team secured his second All-America honor of the week on Saturday night with a third-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle at the 2016 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships in Atlanta, Georgia.

Resetting his own school record in the 1650 freestyle, Hutchins captured a bronze medal in the event with a time of 14 minutes, 33.09 seconds. The Christchurch, New Zealand, native bested his previous school record of 14:38.14 set earlier this year in the mile.

It marked the second All-America honor of the week for Hutchins, who also finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle in school record fashion on Thursday night at the 2016 NCAA Championships, which were hosted by Georgia Tech at the McAuley Aquatic Center.

Also in action on Saturday night was Wisconsin's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Cannon Clifton, Brett Pinfold, Ryan Stack and Ryan Barsanti. The group finished third in the B-final and 11th overall with a school-record time of 2:51.83.

Wisconsin finished 18th in the final team standings with 53 points. It marked UW's best team finish at the NCAA championships since 2013. Under head coach Whitney Hite, the Badgers have finished in the top 20 twice in his five seasons at the helm.

Austin Byrd lowered his personal-best mark in the 200-yard backstroke with a 22nd-place performance and time of 1:41.40. The senior finished his collegiate career ranking second on Wisconsin's all-time list in the 200 backstroke and swam personal-best times in all three events he competed in this week at the NCAA championships.

Clifton also competed individually for the Badgers in the 100-yard freestyle, which he finished 18th overall in with a time of 42.84 seconds.
