Former Badger defenseman continues UW's illustrious history at event
MADISON, Wis. — For the 36th consecutive International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Men's World Ice Hockey Championships, the Wisconsin men's hockey team will have a player representative, as former UW defenseman Jake McCabe was named to the United States preliminary roster on Tuesday.
McCabe's Buffalo Sabres finished short of an NHL playoff berth, but the blueliner will get the chance to continue playing this year when he dons a Team USA sweater at the IIHF World Championships hosted by Russia from May 6-22.
This won't be the first Team USA experience for McCabe, who captained Team USA on the way to gold at the World Junior Championships in 2013 and was part of the sixth-place team at the 2014 IIHF World Championships. McCabe totaled six points on three goals and three assists in seven games in the 2013 run to the gold, but was held scoreless in the 2014 tournament in seven games.
McCabe is fresh off his first full season in the NHL, playing in all but five games for the Sabres this season. The Eau Claire, Wisconsin, native finished the season with 14 points on four goals and 10 assists, including his first career goal in the second game of the season on Oct. 15 against the Florida Panthers. Â
McCabe played three seasons for the Badgers (2011-14), helping UW secure back-to-back tournament titles in the WCHA and Big Ten, respectively, his last two seasons.
He made the immediate jump to the NHL after finishing the 2013-14 at Wisconsin, playing seven games for the Sabres. Last season McCabe played two games in the NHL, spending most of the season with the Sabres AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans. Â
At least one Wisconsin alumni has skated in every world championship dating back to 1978. There were no world championships held during the Olympic years of 1980, 1984 and 1988, though Badgers competed during all three of those Olympic Winter Games.
Group A will play in Moscow and includes No. 2 Russia, No. 3 Sweden, No. 6 Czech Republic, No. 7 Switzerland, No. 10 Latvia, No. 11 Norway, No. 15 Denmark and No. 17 Kazakhstan. Â
Group B will play in St. Petersburg and includes No. 1 Canada, No. 4 Finland, No. 5 United States, No. 8 Slovakia, No. 9 Belarus, No. 12 France, No. 13 Germany and No. 19 Hungary.
Teams are set to play every nation from its group once before the top four teams from Group A and Group B advance to the playoff round. Winners of the quarterfinal games will move on to the semifinals, which lead into the bronze and gold medal games. The medal round will take place on Sunday, May 22.
In addition to McCabe, 11 other players were added to the roster for Team USA on Tuesday.
