Junior tied 18-hole school record with 7-under 65

INDIANAPOLIS – Brooke Ferrell tied an 18-hole school record with a 65 to lead in the opening round of the 2016 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships at The Fort Golf Resort in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ferrell's round is a course competitive 18-hole record at The Fort Golf Resort and matched a Big Ten record for the lowest first round score in Big Ten Championships history.

The junior had seven birdies including a crucial one on the 9th hole (her 18th) after an hour rain delay to record a 7-under 65 to lead all golfers. Ferrell's output bested her previous low of 66 which she netted in the first round of the Cardinal Cup, Oct. 19-20. Ferrell ties the UW record set by Kris Yoo at the NCAA Central Regional May 11, 2013, in Norman, Oklahoma.

Ferrell has a two-shot advantage on Emily Mills of Rutgers entering Round 2 on Saturday.

As a team, Wisconsin placed eighth with a 1-over 289 on Day 1 to match a season-best 18-hole score.

UW is just one shot back of seventh-place Penn State (E, 288) and two strokes behind Rutgers (-1, 287) in sixth.

Purdue (-5, 283) is atop the standings after registering a 5-under 283. Northwestern (-4, 284) is second, followed by Illinois (-3, 285) and Michigan (-3, 285) knotted in third and fifth-place Indiana (-2, 286).

The Badgers' second-best golfer on Friday was sophomore Gabby Curtis, who shot an even par 72, tying her for 23rd. The score marked her sixth round of the year at even-par or below.

Becky Klongland notched a 2-over 74 which put her tied-for-35th.

Wisconsin's remaining three competitors—Jessica Reinecke ( 6, 78), Nat Zeng ( 6, 78) and Michelle Cheung ( 6, 78)—put up identical 6-over 78s. The trio will enter the second round in a tie for 68th.

The Big Ten championships continue on Saturday with 18 holes before wrapping up on Sunday with the 18-hole final round.
