First Badger since 2022 to pickup honor
MADISON, Wis. – UW women's sophomore Izzi Stricker has been named the Wisconsin State Golf Association Amateur Golfer of the Year, the WSGA announced Wednesday.
The Waunakee native is the first Badger to win the award since Emily Lauterbach in 2022.
"I'm super humbled to receive this award from the WSGA," Stricker said. "I put a lot of time and effort into my golf game this summer, and had so much fun doing it in the process. I'm ready to take that momentum into my sophomore spring season, and continue to improve from our fall tournaments, and offseason practice."
She earns the honor thanks to a scintillating summer on the amateur circuit, claiming victories at the Wisconsin Women's Amateur and the Wisconsin Match Play Championship. In the strokeplay amateur, Stricker took the title in a two-hole playoff, notching pars on both holes to get the victory. She finished +10 overall at the grueling Maple Bluff Country Club, using a second-round 72 (E) to solidify her week. She won the Match Play Championship nearly a month prior, defeating Payton Haugen at 5 and 4 in the final match. Stricker also finished in the top 10 at the professional Wisconsin Women's State Open, going +12. The State Open was ultimately won by Badger alum Chloe Chan.
"I'm excited for Izzi," UW head coach Todd Oehrlein said. "She has worked hard and had a great summer. It's a great honor and we're excited to see her add her name to that outstanding list of great players."
Stricker continued her success into the collegiate fall campaign, starting for the Badgers in three tournaments. She was essential in UW's top-10 placement at the Route 66 Invitational, being the team's second-highest finisher. Stricker took 20th overall at +5, highlighted by a second-round 70 (-1) - her personal-best on the season.
Stricker and the Badgers will be back in action for the spring season in early February. Bucky will spend some quality time down in Arizona, travelling to the Tucson Country Club to start the campaign. They'll host the Wesbrook Invitational down in Peoria, Arizona, two weeks later on Feb. 22-23. UW will follow that up with two tournaments in March, and two in April, before taking on the postseason, and Big Ten Championships, on Apr. 24.
