Badgers tied for sixth, Ferrell alone in first at Big Ten tournament

Junior ties 36-hole school record of 137 after even 72 on Day 2
INDIANAPOLIS – The Wisconsin women's golf team recorded a 2-over 290 on Saturday at the 2016 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships at The Fort Golf Resort.
UW's Brooke Ferrell, the leader in round one with a school record 65, (-7, 65-72=137) kept pace atop the player leaderboard, registering an even par 72 on Saturday. The junior is 7-under for the tournament and leads a group of golfers tied for second by two strokes.

Her two-round 137 marks a career-best and ties the school record, previously accomplished by Jessie Gerry in 2008. Wisconsin has never had a first-place finisher at the Big Ten tournament. The best finish for an individual golfer is second, as Malinda Johnson and Rachel Wiese accomplished the feat in 2004 and 1994, respectively.

UW's ( 3, 289-290=579) score on Day 2 was one shot more than its first-round score putting the squad at 3-over for the tournament. The Badgers are tied for eighth with Indiana ( 3, 286-293=579).

Northwestern (-6, 284-286=570) took control of first place, shooting a 2-under 286 in the second round. Ohio State (-4, 291-281=572) is in second, followed by Michigan (-3, 285-288=573) and Purdue (-2, 283-291=574) in third and fourth, respectively. Penn State (E, 288-288=576) rounded out the top five at an even 576.

With other UW scores, Becky Klongland ( 1, 74-71=145) earned a 36-hole career-low after shooting a 1-under 71 in Round 2. She is knotted in 22nd.

UW's third-best competitor is Gabby Curtis ( 3, 72-75=147), with a 3-over 75 in the second round which put her in knot for 34th.

Nat Zeng ( 6, 78-72=150) equaled Ferrell's Day 2 output, shooting an even 72 on Saturday. The freshman is 6-over in her first conference event to tie her for 51st.

Wrapping up the Badgers' scoring were Jessica Reinecke ( 9, 78-75=153) and Michelle Cheung ( 9, 78-75=153). The pair registered identical rounds of 78 and 75, bringing them to 9-over and tied for 62nd.

The Big Ten tournament concludes on Sunday with 18 holes.
