Wisconsin to compete at Spec Towns Invitational this weekend in Athens
ATHENS, Ga. --Â After opening their outdoor season two weeks ago in San Diego, the Wisconsin track and field teams resume competition this week at the Spec Towns Invitational, hosted by the University of Georgia, on Friday and Saturday.
Action on Friday at the Spec Towns Track starts at 1 p.m. CT with the men's discus, while running events start at 3:30 p.m. with the women's 100 hurdles. The women's javelin starts the meet on Saturday at 10 a.m. while the men's 100-meter dash is the first event on the track at 12:30 p.m.
The meet comes on the heels of the Bulldog Decathlon and Heptathlon on Wednesday and Thursday, where Zach Ziemek finished runner-up in the decathlon with a score of 8,047 points while Georgia Ellenwood tied the school record in the heptathlon of 5,914 points en route to a third-place showing.Â
Â
On the women's side, senior Kelsey Card will look to give the Badgers strong performances in the throws. The senior will be competing in the hammer throw, shot put and discus.
Card comes off a strong performance in the discus with a mark of 194 feet, 7 inches, and a first-place finish at the Aztec Invitational. That wouldn't be Card's only impressive marks for the day and she would follow up with a second-place finish in the shot put (54-4 1/2) and third-place showing in the hammer throw (189-6).
In addition, freshman Haley Showalter will be joining Card in the hammer throw and discus, as her hammer throw toss at the Aztec Invitational of 186-5 ranks sixth in program history.
Redshirt sophomore Riley Budde looks to repeat the success he enjoyed at the Aztec Invitational as the thrower earned personal bests in the hammer throw (201-1), shot put (59-5) and discus (181-8). Â In addition, all three of his marks rank on the school's top-10 list.
Junior Lorenzo Larry is slated to compete in both the 100 and 200 meters in Georgia, his home state. Larry comes off a fifth-place finish in the 100 meters (10.57) and a third-place showing in the 200 meters (21.13) at the Aztec Invitational.
Jake Wallenfang, a 2015 NCAA West Preliminary Round qualifier, is set to compete in the men's pole vault on Friday at 3 p.m. CT along with teammate Tim Guthrie. Â
On the women's side of the pole vault, Taylor Amann will look to make bars after her fifth-place finish and clearance of 13-0 3/4 at the Aztec Invitational and will be joined by freshman Claire Buck.
For the Wisconsin men, Ryan Davis will represent UW in the 400 meters where he ran to a fourth-place finish in 48.21 in his last time out. Dairius Ragland will open his outdoor campaign at the Spec Towns track in the 110 meter hurdles.
Russell Sandvold will switch gears to the 1500 meters after racing in the 3000 meters at the Aztec Invitational, finishing third in 8:27.37.
