HARRIS, Mich. -- Senior Brooke Ferrell will play in her first professional tournament Friday-Sunday at the Island Resort Championship in Harris, Michigan.
Playing on a sponsor's exemption, Ferrell is one of two amateurs in the field which also includes her sister, Allyssa. Brooke has a 2:10 p.m. tee time on Friday in the 54-hole tournament held at the Sweetgrass Golf Club.
Ferrell was named first team All-Big Ten Conference in 2016, leading the Big Ten tournament for the first two days before finishing third with a 7-under and school 54-hole record 209. Along the way, she set school records for her opening round of 65, tying the school 18-hole mark, and had even par 72 the second day for a 36-hole record 137. It was the best finish by a UW player since Malinda Johnson placed third in 2003.
Ferrell led UW in five of 10 tournaments last season and her scoring average of 73.20 is the best in school history by over a stroke. She tied for first in two tournaments, including the Cardinal Cup in Louisville, Kentucky, where she shot a 3-under par 66-74-73—213. She also tied for first at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Arizona, with a then-new school record mark of 5-under 71-71-69—211. She earned Big Ten Player of the Week after both tournament finishes.
Since arriving on the UW golf scene in 2013, the Edgerton, Wisconsin, native set the freshman scoring record with her 75.34 strokes per round, besting the old mark of 76.68 set in 2010 by Alyssa Elliott. Ferrell's stroke average ranked third on the team as a freshman.
Also as a freshman, she led the Badgers at the Big Ten championship by placing fourth with 5-over par 78-75-68=221. It was the best finish ever by a UW freshman. The score also tied Ferrell's then-best career 18-hole mark of 68 and was her best finish in a tournament in her rookie season.
As a sophomore, Ferrell led the team in scoring with a then-school-best 74.72 strokes per round, pacing the Badgers in five of 11 tournaments. She led the Badgers at the NCAA Regional and tied for 20th with 72-75-77—224.Â
At the 2016 NCAA Regional, Ferrell shot an 11-over 78-71-78--221 on the par 72, 6,273-yard The Traditions Course in Bryan, Texas, to finish 59th.
