Freshman looks to participate in 2016 U18 FIBA Americas in July
MADISON, Wis. – Kendra Van Leeuwen, a freshman on the Wisconsin women's basketball team, is one of 17 athletes invited to the Canada basketball U18 women's national team tryouts and training camp. The camp will be held from June 27 – July 8 at York University in Toronto.
Leeuwen, a 5-8 guard from Brantford, Ontario, was a member of the Canadian U17 national team in 2014. The team placed sixth at the World Championships with Van Leeuwen as the second-leading scorer on the squad.
A three-time member of Team Ontario, Van Leeuwen was named All-Canadian in 2014 as a member of the U17 team and in 2013 as a member of the U15 team. She was named the MVP in 2013, leading Team Ontario to the championship title.
A final 12-player roster will be announced prior to the team leaving for Valdivia, Chile, for the 2016 U18 FIBA Americas from July 13-17.
"We're looking forward to working with this group," said Carly Clarke, head coach of the team. Clarke takes the helm of the U18 team after leading the U16/17 team for five years. "It will be a competitive camp as we look to put together the best team to compete at the FIBA Americas in Chile and qualify for the 2017 U19 World Championships."
In 2015, the U19 women's national team finished eighth at the U19 FIBA World Championships. Canada is currently ranked fourth worldwide in the FIBA youth girls rankings.
