Badgers just nine strokes off the lead entering final round
Minneapolis -- Senior Brooke Ferrell made quite a statement to open the 2016-17 season. The Edgerton, Wisconsin, native and Big Ten preseason honoree is tied for first at the Minnesota Invitational after shooting 1-under par (73-70=143) on the first day of the tournament.
As a team, the Badgers shot 306-293=599 (+23) and sit in eighth place among the 11-team field. Merely 10 strokes separate the top nine teams heading into tomorrow's 18-hole final round. Texas (+14, 296-294=590) holds the 36-hole lead with Louisville and Purdue sharing second place at 15-over par, 591.
"It was pretty windy today, especially early in the day. The wind was blowing pretty hard so it was very difficult conditions," UW head coach Todd Oehrlein said. "I was really happy to see some consistent scores in the afternoon round and for us to bounce back. We didn't play great in the first round. We were in okay position to start but we struggled to finish the round off."
Junior Gabby Curtis shot a 76-75=151 (+7) and is tied for 25th. Sophomore Tess Hackworthy (+8, 78-74=152) is one stroke behind her and tied for 35th.
With a 9-over performance, sophomore Nat Zeng (79-74=153) is tied for 38th while junior Becky Klongland (+19, 80-83=163) is in 57th place.
Competing as an individual, freshman Eloise Healy is in 58th place after shooting a 79 and 85 to be 20-over at 164.
"I think everyone feels pretty confident that with a solid round tomorrow we can move up the leaderboard so everybody is ready to go," Oehrlein said. "The golf course has a lot of history and it has hosted the U.S. Open before, so it's that caliber of a golf course. You need to be sharp and play very solid here, it's a demanding place."
Play continues Tuesday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
