Badgers clinch their second Big Ten win at Northwestern
EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Wisconsin men's soccer team found themselves in another overtime battle against Big Ten foe Northwestern on Wednesday night at the Martin Stadium. In the 92nd minute of play, Chicago native and UW junior midfielder Mike Catalano slashed the net and finished off a great pass from Mark Segbers, giving the Badgers a thrilling 2-1 victory.
Despite berating the Wildcats with 9-1 first-half shots and dominating ball possession, it was Northwestern that struck first. In the 13th minute of play, Wildcat forward Elo Ozumba received a ball Camden Buescher and notched his first goal of the season with a near-perfect header.
"It's a challenge these guys haven't really seen that often in terms of being able to come back and win a game," head coach John Trask said. "They did a great job preparing for this game. They were going to make it difficult on us. I thought we showed great patience."
It wasn't until the 63rd minute of play that Mark Segbers made an incredible individual effort to assist Christopher Mueller with his first goal of the season.
"It was a great individual effort by Mark to play the ball to Chris who had an incredible finish," Trask added. "Chris has been huge. Unfortunately, he was a little sick down in Florida and wasn't able to show his true ability but he's a player that brings a lot to the table. We're very fortunate that he plays for us. He's not just scoring goals, it's all the other things that he's doing for the team. It's just great to see Chris really coming into his own his junior year."
The Badgers had no shortages of chances against the Wildcats launching 22-5 shots with 9-2 shots on goal. Corner kicks were 7-1 in favor of the Badgers.
Wisconsin moves to 2-0 in conference play, marking its best start in the Big Ten since starting 2-0 in the 2011 season.
Philipp Schilling got the start in net for UW where he allowed one goal on one save.
The Badgers take a week off to rest and prepare for another Big Ten matchup when they will take on the Nittany Lions in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Friday, Sept. 23 at 4:30 p.m. CT.
"It was a great team win and we're going to enjoy it for a couple days," Trask said. "Then we're going to get focused in on Penn State."
