Pavelski captain, Suter alternate captain for Team USA at World Cup of Hockey

McDonagh also part of seven-man leadership group for Team USA at World Cup of Hockey
MADISON, Wis. – With the World Cup of Hockey set to begin on Sept. 17 in Toronto, Team USA named former Badger Joe Pavelski captain of its team, while UW product Ryan Suter was tabbed an alternate captain alongside Patrick Kane. Ryan McDonagh was also added to the team's leadership group that includes David Backes, Ryan Kesler and Zach Parise.Â
Pavelski, who serves as captain of the San Jose Sharks and led the team to the Stanley Cup Final last season, has recorded 10 points, two goals and eight assists, in 17 appearances for the United States, most recently representing the United States at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. He is coming off scoring 38 goals and 40 assists for the Sharks last season while leading all NHL players with 11 game-winning goals. The 32-year-old center played for the Badgers from 2004-06 while helping the team to the 2006 NCAA championship.Â
Suter, an assistant captain for the Minnesota Wild, enters the 2016 World Cup of Hockey having played in a team-high 70 games in 11 previous international competitions for the United States. Suter has previously served as an alternate captain during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where the U.S. won a silver medal. He is coming off of a season for Minnesota in which he tied a career-high with eight goals, and set a career-high in with 51 points. Suter played one year for the Badgers, during the 2003-04 season, where he appeared in 39 games, scored three goals and added 16 assists.Â
McDonagh, who serves as the New York Rangers captain and has played for Team USA head coach John Tortorella while he was the head coach of the Rangers, serves on the four-man leadership group that supplements the captains. The 27-year-old defenseman played for the United States at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi with Pavelski and Suter as well. McDonagh played for Wisconsin from 2007-10, skating in 119 games and tallying 14 goals and 32 assists in that time frame.Â
Former Badger and current New York Rangers forward Derek Stepan will play alongside the trio of Pavelski, Suter and McDonagh on Team USA at the World Cup of Hockey.
The World Cup of Hockey is set for Sept. 17-Oct. 1 in Toronto with all games scheduled for Air Canada Centre. Team USA is currently conducting training camp in Columbus, Ohio and will play Canada in Columbus in the first of three pre-tournament games on Sept. 9. The United States' first game of the competition will be against Team Europe on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2. All games throughout the tournament can be watched on the ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNEWS.
