Senior’s pentathlon score ranks in top five of NCAA
IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Wisconsin women's track and field team returned to action Friday competing in day one of the Black and Gold Premier.
Â
Junior Georgia Ellenwood won the pentathlon by nearly 400 points, recording a top-five NCAA pentathlon score of 4,104.
Â
"Even though I came out with the win and hopefully got a mark for the NCAAs," Ellenwood said, "it wasn't what I know I'm capable of. I want to improve on how I ended last year and incorporate everything I've been learning this year. I wasn't very happy with my point total, but it's motivation to get back to the track and work on the technical things."
Â
Ellenwood's best event was the shot put earning the top mark of 41 feet, 1 and 3/4 inches (12.54 meters). She also bested the field in the high jump, clearing 5-7 ¾ (1.72m). A 60 hurdles time of 8.80 seconds, an 18-9 (5.71 m) jump in the long jump, and a 2:20.67 800 meter rounded out her first pentathlon of the year.
Â
Sophomore Emma Haugen had a big day in the high jump. After shedding her competitors at 5-8 (1.73m), she easily cleared 5-9 ¼ (1.76m) to claim the victory.
Â
In the throws, sophomore Banke Oginni continued her winning ways, throwing a monstrous 66 feet, 4 ¼ inches (20.22 m) to break the facility record at the Iowa Recreation Building. Freshman Haley Showalter was runner-up with a mark of 60-1 (18.31 m). Sophomores Kennedy Blahnik and Hanna Barton were third and fourth with throws of 55-6 ½ (16.93 m) and 55-4 ¾ (16.88 m), respectively, as the Badgers swept the top four.
Â
Senior Brenna Detra and freshman Cynthia Ubah also both picked up wins in the 600 meters. Detra won the invitational section of the 600 meters, finishing in 1:31.12, a second off of her personal record. Ubah won the open 600 meters, crossing the line in 1:39.34.
Â
In the invite race of the 200 meters, senior Ebony McClendon finished as the runner-up with a time of 24.65, matching her time from the Minnesota dual.
Â
The Badgers will be back tomorrow for day two of the meet. The women's field events start at 11 a.m. and the remainder of the premier running events are set to start at 5:30 p.m.
