Former Badger in consideration for Olympic roster
MADISON, Wis.— The Wisconsin men's hockey team now has three former players being evaluated for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games as René Bourque was recently named to Hockey Canada's national men's team for the upcoming Karjala Cup.
Bourque, a native of Lac La Biche, Alberta, was named to the 26-man roster that will compete at the Karjala Cup, held Nov. 8-12 in Helsinki, Finland, and Biel, Switzerland. The tournament will be used as an evaluation tool for Hockey Canada to select the Olympic roster.
Former Badgers Robbie Earl and Tom Gilbert were selected by USA Hockey to compete at the 2017 Deutschland Cup in Augsburg, Germany, to also be evaluated for an Olympic roster spot.
Bourqe currently plays for Djurgardens IF of the Swedish Hockey League where he leads the team with seven goals. The forward spent 12 season in the NHL playing for Chicago, Calgary, Montreal, Anaheim, Columbus and Colorado.
A Badger from 2000-04, serving as a team captain his senior season, Bourque has previously skated with Team Canada at the 2010 World Championship.
The 2018 Olympic Winter Games take place Feb. 9 -25 in PyeongChang, South Korea.
