MINNEAPOLIS – The Wisconsin swimming and diving team wrapped up its quad dual meet vs. Minnesota, Penn State and Michigan in style Saturday, claiming three victories to go along with a number of outstanding individual performances.
Sophomore Beata Nelson added to her fantastic Friday performance with wins in the 200-yard backstroke (1 minute, 55.06 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (53.95) on Saturday.
Nelson also was part of UW's victorious 200 medley relay squad, along with Jess Unicomb, Marissa Berg and Emmy Sehmann (1:39.88). The fearsome foursome has won the event in each of Wisconsin's four meets this season.
Wisconsin head coach Whitney Hite has high hopes for the quartet.
"It's one of our better relays, and considering who we've competed against, they have a real shot of doing some special things in conference and at NCAAs," he said. "They'll just keep getting faster, which is exciting."
On the men's side, the Badgers dominated the 200 backstroke. Senior Todd McCarthy won the race with a time of 1:47.01, and was followed closely by Cam Tysoe in second place (1:47.73), freshman Matt Novinski in fourth (1:48.87) and Justin Temprano in fifth (1:48.94).
"They did a great job today," Hite said. "Todd especially was great today. We've been waiting for it, but it was well worth the wait. I'm proud of the way he competed. He's just doing what he's capable of."
Wisconsin claimed team wins over Penn State (198.5-154.5, men; 215-138, women), but fell to Michigan (266-87, men; 235-118, women) and Minnesota (216-137, men; 191.5-161.5, women).
"This was really positive for us," Hite said. "Minnesota has great diving, and our divers took on that challenge and competed really well. And overall, we competed all day and put together our best overall meet yet.
"What we're doing is working. We're working really hard. This meet should give us some motivation moving forward to continue to put in the work."
