Hawkeyes use strong fourth quarter to win 71-60
2017 Big Ten Tournament Bracket
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A 20-8 fourth quarter propelled Iowa to a 71-60 win over the Wisconsin women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Badgers (8-21, 3-13 B1G) led 52-51 after three quarters and extended their lead to 58-54 less than four minutes into the fourth quarter. Iowa (17-12, 8-8) went on an 11-0 scoring run over the next three minutes to lead 62-58 with 4:25 to play.
Two free throws from Avyanna Young, who shared game-high honors with 22 points, halted the Hawkeyes' streak and made it a 65-60 game with 2:53 to play. The Badgers failed the score in the remaining minutes as Iowa won on Senior Day.
After shooting 50 percent (14-28) from the field the first half, Wisconsin shot just 25.8 percent (8-31) for the second half to finish the game at 37.3 percent. UW made a season-low two 3-pointers.
Sophomore Marsha Howard and freshman Courtney Fredrickson both added 10 points for UW.
Iowa shot 49.1 percent (28-57) from the field and 91.7 percent (11-12) from the free-throw line. The Hawkeyes also outrebounded the Badgers 40-30 as UI sophomore Megan Gustafson recorded a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
Quoting the Badgers
"I thought our kids fought the whole game. Under the five-minute mark, when it's a one or even two possession game, you have to credit Iowa. I thought we got some pretty good looks at the basket. We didn't run with the same type of intensity that we were trying to do to attack the zone the last five or six minutes of the game and you have to give Iowa credit for that.
"We've grown as a team, to fight like this on the road. We had the lead in the fourth quarter, I think that's progress with our team. I was really excited to see someone like Ashley Kelsick to step up and knock down a couple of shots.
"I'm proud of how our kids fought to be able to get it three-and-a-half quarters in, where it's a game that maybe you can steal one the road. It's progress. The problem is we're running out of time. We're on a one-game season now going into Wednesday."
