Badgers look to solidify Big Ten travel roster this weekend
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's and women's track and field teams hit the road for Ames, Iowa and the Iowa State Classic this weekend. The two-day meet kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday with the men's long jump. Running events start at noon with the preliminary heats of the 60 meters, and fans can stream the meet with FloTrack Pro.
The men's team will have some stiff competition this weekend, as No. 11 Kansas leads the field.
Last time out, the Badgers finished fourth at the Armory Invitational in New York. This weekend more Badgers will be competing, as the Iowa State Classic is one of the last meets for the athletes to make the list for the 2017 Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Sprinter Lorenzo Larry will compete in the 60 and 200 meters. Last weekend he made it to the finals in the 60 meters with a qualifying time of 6.80. At the Black and Gold Premier, Larry won the 60 meters in 6.75 and was runner-up in the premier 200 meters with a time of 21.63.
In the 400 meters, five Badgers will get the nod. Senior Ryan Davis posted a 47.96 400 meters in the invitational section of the Armory Invitational, placing third. Joining Davis is Alex Teague, who placed third in the collegiate 400 meters at the Armory Invitational with a time of 48.86.
Junior Cooper Barth and sophomore Eric Brown will toe the line in the 800 meters. Last weekend Barth finished 10th in the mile with a personal-best time of 4:13.85. Brown placed in the invite 800 meters at the Armory Invitational, posting Wisconsin's best 800 meter time of the season of 1:51.12.
Freshman Olin Hacker and senior Russell Sandvold are to run the 3000 meters. Both are having great indoor seasons thus far. Hacker won the 3000 meters at the Minnesota dual, crossing the finish in 8:11.80. Most recently, Hacker finished third in the mile at the Armory Invitational. Sandvold will be running his first 3000 meters of the year. He also competed in the mile at the Armory Invitational, placing sixth with a personal-best time of 4:09.42.
In the 5000 meters, senior Malachy Schrobilgen, sophomore Tyson Miehe and freshman Ben Eidenschink will run their first 5000 meters of the season. Schrobilgen has yet to compete in a meet this season, but ended the cross country season with a 25th place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. Miehe finished second in the collegiate 3000 meters last weekend with a time of 8:16.86. Eidenschink also competed in the 3000 meters at the Armory Invitational, finishing fifth.
The multi-events crew will compete in the 60 hurdles. Senior Brandon Mortensen leads Wisconsin in the event. His best performance of the year came in a victory at the Badger Icebreaker where he clocked in at 8.19. Sophomore Trent Nytes ran an 8.54 in the heptathlon at the Black and Gold Premier. Freshman Zachary Lorbeck posted an 8.57 with a fourth place finish at the Minnesota dual.
In the high jump, Nytes leads the way with a season-best mark of 6 feet, 10 3/4 inches in the heptathlon high jump at the Black and Gold Premier. Lorbeck had the second best mark in the heptathlon that day, clearing 6-8 1/4.
Junior Tim Guthrie, freshman Rashid Coulibaly and junior Jake Wallenfang are set to compete in the pole vault. Guthrie leads the way with a clearance of 16-4 3/4 at the Minnesota Dual. Coulibaly brought home third place at the Black and Gold Premier, vaulting 16-2 3/4. Wallenfang's best mark of the season is 15-9.
In the throwing events, junior Riley Budde ranks 10th in the NCAA in the weight throw. At the Badger Icebreaker, Budde threw a bomb of 71-4. Junior Josh McDonald leads the way in the shot put, winning the Minnesota dual with a mark of 60-0 1/2.
