WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Despite resuming game one nearly 19 hours after it began, the Wisconsin softball team picked up a 5-2 win over Purdue in the first game of the series before falling, 5-4, to the Boilermakers in the second matchup of the day.

After Friday's matchup was halted by lightning, the teams picked up in the top of the fifth inning with a 5-1 Wisconsin (26-8 overall, 5-6 Big Ten) lead. 

Purdue (17-28, 6-7) scored the first run of the day in the sixth inning on an error and a double, but the Badger defense was able to hold out for the remainder of the game, winning 5-2.

Game two started slowly, but after two scoreless innings the Badger bats exploded to score four runs in the third.

Wisconsin put two runners on as both senior Taylor Berry and sophomore Kelly Welsh were walked to lead off the third inning. Coming back to the top of the batting order, junior Kelsey Jenkins stepped up and ripped an RBI single into right to score junior Brianna Flugaur, who was pinch running for Berry, to give the Badgers the 1-0 advantage.

The Badgers took a 2-0 lead after loading up the bases with the next two batters before senior Sara Novak smacked a single through the left side and beat out the throw to score Jenkins. 

With the bases still loaded, freshman Jordan Little snuck a two-RBI single to the left side, scoring senior Chloe Miller and junior Brooke Wyderski to put Wisconsin up 4-0.

The Boilermakers retaliated in the bottom of the frame, putting up three runs in the third on a pair of singles to the right side, trailing just 4-3 heading to the fourth.

Freshman Kaitlyn Menz came in to pitch and Wisconsin held the Boilermakers scoreless for three innings, but Purdue tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to come away with the 5-4 victory. PU Pitcher Kaitlynn Moody grounded out to shortstop to score Mallory Baker and tied the game up at four all before Sam Peltz sent a single through left field to score Alexa Binckes and clinch the Boilermaker win.

-Wisconsin outhit the Boilermakers 8-7 but recorded one error to Purdue's zero.
-Kaitlyn Menz has gone 1-1 so far, throwing a combined 7.0 innings and throwing seven strikeouts.
