Ferrell, Klongland and Zeng all claim spots in the top-10
MAINEVILLE, OHIO -- Led by senior Brooke Ferrell, three Badgers sit within the top-10 following the first round of the Big Ten Championships as the Wisconsin women's golf team holds second place.
Â
The Badgers recorded a 3-over 291 at TPC River's Bend to enter the second round just three strokes behind leader Northwestern.
Â
"The fact that we have good depth was a strength of ours today and I hope it will be in the next two days," UW head coach Todd Oehrlein said. "We had six players all play a pretty solid round of golf today. It's a demanding golf course and so if you're sharp you can find yourself in good position and good shots are rewarded, but if you're not sharp it will penalize you fast."
Â
Ferrell fired a 1-under 71 to be tied for fourth place and is just three strokes off leader Elodie Van Dievoet of Michigan.
Â
Junior Becky Klongland got off to a solid start and sits in a tie for sixth after recording an even par-72, while sophomore Nat Zeng finished one stroke back to be tied for eighth. Â
Â
Both junior Gabby Curtis and sophomore Jessica Reinecke are knotted at 20th place after recording a 3-over 75.
Â
In a tie for 35th is senior Michelle Cheung, who ended the day at 5-over.
Â
UW holds a four-stroke lead over third-place Michigan. Ohio State (+8) and Michigan State (+10) round out the top-five of the 14-team field.
Â
"Tomorrow is going to be a battle with the weather forecast and everyone trying to make a move up the leaderboard, so it's going to be one of those days where we'll have to be really strong mentally and just compete all day long," Oehrlein said.
Â
The Badgers are set to tee off Saturday's second round at 9:18 a.m. (CT). Live scoring can be found at GolfStat.com.
