UW defeats Michigan State in East Lansing but falls to Michigan
EAST LANSING, Mich.-- The No. 11 Wisconsin women's rowing team rowed to a Big Ten Double Dual split in East Lansing, Michigan on Saturday, defeating No. 16 Michigan State in the morning session but falling to No. 3 Michigan in the afternoon.
Â
The Badgers opened up the morning with a victory in the second novice eight race, finishing with a time of 7:04.12, 18 seconds ahead of Michigan who came in second. Michigan State finished just 0.6 seconds behind the Wolverines.
"We completed a really good day of racing," head coach Bebe Bryans said. "It was our first full-team race day and I think we had a really successful day. The weather was really good in the morning, it got a bit rough in the late afternoon, but everybody handled it really well."
Â
The strong start for UW would carry over for the rest of the morning session as Wisconsin won every event but one. The Badgers won the third varsity four, a three-way contest between Minnesota and Michigan, second varsity four, varsity four, second varsity eight and varsity eight races against Michigan State.
Â
The only race in which the Spartans topped the Badgers was the novice eight, winning by six seconds.
Â
The final score between UW and MSU was 46-22 in favor of the Badgers.
Â
The Cardinal and White began the afternoon session just as they began the morning, with a victory in the second novice eight race between Michigan and Michigan State. UW finished five seconds ahead of Michigan State and nine in front of Michigan.
Â
Wisconsin claimed victories in the second varsity four and third varsity four but it would not prove to be enough as Michigan defeated them by a score of 44-28.
"They definitely learned some good lessons in the morning that they put together in the afternoon," Bryans said. "We just got a lot of information, a lot to work on and we're really happy to have the opportunity to go to Michigan State. We're looking forward to a couple of weeks off and then hitting it in Clemson again. We get to see Michigan again so we're happy about that as well."
Â
The Badgers will have next weekend off before heading to Clemson, South Carolina for the Clemson Invitational on April 22-23.
