MADISON, Wis. — After months of hard work and preparation, the Big Ten championships have finally arrived for the 10th-ranked Wisconsin women's rowing team.
After getting rained out two weekends ago on Lake Mendota against Minnesota, the weather once again will play a factor, as heavy flooding in Indianapolis has forced the championships to be contested on just one day, Sunday, May 14.
"Our goal at the beginning of the year was to show up with the opportunity to win," head coach Bebe Bryans said. "We really feel that we've done that. I think that looking at the work that we have done and the people that we have on board, we're confident that we are going to go and compete to win the championship."
The flooding at Eagle Creek Park took out the first 1000 meters or so of the course, so the local organizing committee has been scrambling since late last week looking for a way to make things work. It appears they will work out, but the Badgers like where they sit regardless.
"I think we've been strong enough all year, that we've made our case," Bryans said in a news conference on Monday. "We are a strong contender and we have a good shot at being selected based on the performances we had already."
On their resume, Wisconsin defeated 19th-ranked Michigan State at the Big Ten Double Dual in East Lansing, finished third and ahead of six other ranked teams at the Clemson Invitational and finished all three competing boats on the podium at the San Diego Crew Classic.
The Badgers have had good success at the Big Ten championships, racing to seven consecutive top-three finishes, including a second-place result last season. Despite their good run of form, the team knows how strong the conference has become, with six out of eight teams falling within the top-20 in the national rankings.
"There has been a general improvement from the whole conference, and not just from the top boats," Bryans said. "We haven't had a situation where there are potentially six boats that can win the varsity eight and that's pretty exciting."
UW's lone conference title was claimed was during the 2009-10 season.
Following the Big Ten championships, Wisconsin will likely be competing for the NCAA title in West Windsor, New Jersey from May 26-28. The selection show for the national regatta will take place on Tuesday, May 16 at 4 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.
The Cardinal and White finished ninth last year at the national championships, finishing ninth in the varsity eight, 10th in the second varsity eight and 11th in the varsity four. The best showing at the NCAA championships for the Badgers came in 2009-10 season when the team finished seventh.
