Men’s rower, softball seniors finishing up Badger careers at upcoming national championships
MADISON, Wis. – The Big Ten Conference announced its annual postgraduate scholarship recipients last week and Wisconsin men's rower Alex Idarraga and softball third baseman Sara Novak are on the list.
Both plan to continue their education in graduate school and were awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based on their previous academic achievements.
Idarraga, who raced for Wisconsin's second varsity eight in their ninth-place finish last weekend at Eastern Sprints, is a Russian major whose plan includes continuing his undergraduate studies next year with Wisconsin's Russian Flagship Program, before he looks towards medical school.
The Milwaukee native is still in Madison training with the Badgers as they ready for the 2017 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships, set for June 2-4 in Gold River, California.
Novak, who is gearing up for the NCAA softball Eugene Regional that begins on Friday, just graduated with a degree in biology and is expected to continue her education at veterinary school at Michigan State.
Novak is batting .329 this season with eight doubles and 30 runs batted in in 48 games played. She and the Badgers (33-15-0) open NCAA play on Friday against Missouri at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN.
Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarship. Students must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.
The scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student's postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.
