Callie at the Catch: Gearing up for Race Day
May 25, 2017 | Women's Rowing
Stop lights and boat names at the NCAA championships
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert will be giving regular updates this winter and spring from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the junior raced mainly as part of the second varsity eight last season, helping her boat to a top-10 finish at the 2016 NCAA Championships.
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The anticipation to race is increasing as we get closer and closer to race day.
We flew into New Jersey on Monday evening and since then we have been getting comfortable with the time change, the course and the whole experience. The athlete area at the course is filled with NCAA signs, snack tents with music blasting, and standing among all the top teams in the nation makes the feeling of being at NCAAs really sink in. To add to the experience, we are even staying in the same hotel as Princeton, Iowa, Navy and Notre Dame.
The race course on Mercer Lake has an addition to the stake boats that I have never seen before, a stop light. Instead of following the official's flag, we watch the red light turn to green as the official says, 'attention, go.' This is an exciting new aspect that will be interesting for my first time.
On Wednesday we had to weigh-in our boats in order to prove they are above the minimum. This is something done at most big races, but what differed about this particular weigh-in than any other we have done was our christening of our new eight that we called the Kristen Thorsness. Kristen is a former Badger, a former Olympian, and is now an official who was working at the weigh-in when we brought the boat with her name on it up to her. The look of pure happiness made her speechless and that is something hard to do so she said herself. It was a special moment and we were all extremely happy to be a part of it. We could not be more proud to row in her boat.
Next on our list is sticking to our taper by staying off of our feet whenever we are not rowing and making sure we are hydrating. Racing begins Friday with heats in the morning and we cannot wait.
Morale is high as we are having fun, staying relaxed, and gearing up for the first race!
