UW gains consistency on Day 2 in Columbus

All five Badgers shoot in the 70s
COLUMBUS, Ohio – On a day where the conditions were much more tame than round one, the Wisconsin women's golf team was able to display some of its trademark depth and improve 12 strokes upon its day one score at the NCAA Columbus Regional on the Scarlet Course at the Ohio State Golf Club on Tuesday.
Junior Becky Klongland and sophomore Nat Zeng both shot 2-over par 74s to pace the Badgers. Senior Michelle Cheung, junior Gabby Curtis and sophomore Jessica Reinecke all shot 5-over par 77s. After a first round that saw four of the five UW players score in the 80s, the improvement was noticeable.
Â
"I thought we played a lot better today," Wisconsin head coach Todd Oehrlein said. "I was encouraged by how we played today. I thought overall it was a much better round. We saw a few more putts drop. We made a few more birdies so that's encouraging heading into tomorrow's round."
The Badgers more than doubled their birdie output from yesterday, recording 10 compared to just four in round one.
Curtis recovered nicely after a rough start, playing her final 10 holes at even par. Her two-day total of 5-over par 149 puts her squarely in the mix to qualify for the NCAA Championship as an individual. The top three players who are not among the six qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship. She currently sits tied for fifth among that group, just two shots out of third place.
Zeng and Klongland both shot 80 in the opening round but were much more comfortable today. After an opening-hole bogey, Klongland settled in and was at -2 through her first 10 holes. Back-to-back bogeys on No. 2 and No. 3 (her 11th and 12th holes of the day) brought her back to even par before she double-bogeyed her final hole.
Â
Zeng was the most consistent Badger of the day, going 1-over on both the front and back nines and recording just three bogeys to go with a birdie on No. 12.
Cheung and Reinecke, who were a combined +21 on Monday shaved 11 strokes off that score in round two.Â
In the team standings, Wisconsin enters the final round nine strokes back of the all-important sixth spot. Big Ten rival Purdue enters the last day in sixth at +31. The Badgers are in 12th place at +40 as eight teams are separated by just 11 strokes.
"The message to the players is that there's still a good round out there for them," Oehrlein said. "That number is out there for them."
The Badgers are scheduled to begin the final round on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. ET. Live stats can be found at GolfStat.com.
