Will make second career appearance at the PHC Classic in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Gabby Curtis, who played in the PHC Classic two years ago, ran away from the field in the Badger Mutual Insurance Women's Amateur on Monday at Brown Deer Park Golf Course to earn the final spot in the field for the PHC Classic.Â
Curtis shot a 72 (par-73) on Sunday and a 5-under, 68 on Monday to win with a two-day score of 6-under, 140. She won by six shots over Mikayla Smith, who turned in two rounds of 73.Â
"I wasn't hitting my driver very well yesterday and today I was able to hit more fairways," said Curtis. "I was able to get on in two on the par-5 holes and I made two eagles."
Curtis made eagle on holes one and 13.Â
"It's really cool to get to play in another professional event and I'm so close to home," said Curtis, who held the second lowest scoring average for the Badgers in 2016-17 (74.84). "The first time I played in this event, it didn't go over very well so I am glad to get a second chance."
Curtis said that a realistic goal this week would be to make the cut.Â
"I'm a lot more consistent now, I'm finding that my bad scores are not as bad as they used to be," explained Curtis. "I just really want to make the most of the opportunity."
Curtis said she does have aspirations to play professional golf after graduating from Wisconsin.Â
"I might as well give professional golf a shot out of college because that is the best that I will probably be," said Curtis, who will be a senior for the Badgers this season. "I'm closer to graduating now and I may be taking this route soon so this is definitely an opportunity to measure my game."
The PHC Classic is a 54-hole tournament on the LPGA's Symetra Tour that will take place Friday-Sunday at Brown Deer Park Golf Course in Milwaukee.
