Sophomore Dani Rhodes powers past goalie for first goal
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's soccer team unofficially opened its season with a 1-0 victory over University of Detroit-Mercy in a scrimmage at the McClimon Complex on Sunday.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore Dani Rhodes broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute by blasting in the season's first goal. After Rhodes beat UDM's goalkeeper in a one-on-one, the forward took full advantage of the open net by slotting the ball low and into the goal.
"It was a great starting point for us early in the preseason," head coach Paula Wilkins said. "It was great to have a lot of our younger players get in and gain some really good experience that will help us get ready to face Marquette on Thursday night."
The Badgers out-shot the Titans, 19-5, and tallied 10 shots on goal to just two from the Titans. UW goalkeepers Caitlyn Clem and Jordyn Bloomer split time and finished with two saves, while UDM recorded a total of nine saves. Wisconsin tallied five corner kicks to Detroit-Mercy's two.
Wisconsin hosts another exhibition tilt on Thursday when Interstate-94 rival Marquette visits the McClimon Complex. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (CT) and admission is free.
