Badgers sweep Syracuse from service line

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Behind 10 service aces, the sixth-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team improved to 3-0 on the year with a 25-9, 25-14, 25-16 sweep of Syracuse. The Badgers defeated the Orange in the first round of the K-State Invitational at Ahearn Field House.
Freshman Sydney Hilley recorded a career-best four service aces to lead all players. Freshman Dana Rettke (2 aces), sophomore Sarah Dodd (2) and freshman Grace Loberg (1) also had career highs from the service line.
The Badgers changed up their line up this morning with Dodd starting at libero and Loberg getting the nod at outside hitter. Dodd led all players with seven digs while Loberg had a career-high eight kills and hit .429 (8 kills – 2 errors – 14 attempts).
Senior Kelli Bates led all hitters with 12 kills while Rettke added 10 putaways, her third straight match with double-figure kills.
Wisconsin hit .449 (46 – 11 – 78) while holding Syracuse to .033 (15-13-61). UW outdug Cuse 29-16 but was outblocked 5.5 – 4.0.

"Today's match was hard. There was a lot of subbing that was going on. In this game, it's really hard to find any type of rhythm or flow. I didn't really see us slacking off with our intensity or anything.
"Every match you learn a little bit more about the group you have. There's a lot of learning right now with how young we are. I liked how we came ready to play in the match. When we got up big, we stayed very business-like all the way through and I think that's a good sign."

The Badgers 10 service aces ranks third on the UW single record list under 25-point rally scoring. Â On the single-match record list. Freshman Sydney Hilley's match-high four aces ties for fifth on the UW single-match record list.Â
It was over when
UW dominated the first two sets but Syracuse made some lineup changes in the third set to make it more of a battle. The score was knotted at six before kills by Madison Duello and Loberg put the Badgers up 8-6. Wisconsin led 14-12 before a 5-1 UW run, led by three kills from Tionna Williams, put the Badgers up 19-13. Two kills and a block by Bates over the last six plays gave Wisconsin the sweep. ÂÂ
