Badgers look to defend title on home course
MADISON, Wis. – For the first time in two years, the Wisconsin women's golf team will host a tournament at University Ridge Golf Course. This week's East-West Match Play consists of eight teams. Joining the Badgers will be Iowa State, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon, Oregon State and UC Davis. The tournament begins with 36 holes of stroke play on Sunday followed by team match play on Monday and Tuesday.
Here are five things to know:
1. Familiar Faces: For the second week in a row, Wisconsin's lineup features the same five golfers. It is an experienced group made up of seniors Gabby Curtis, Lexi Harkins, Aya Johnson and Becky Klongland along with junior Jessica Reinecke. Sophomore Bobbi Stricker, who played in the Minnesota Invitational last week as an individual, and freshman Mackenzie Hahn, making her Badger debut, will compete as individuals.
2. Defending Champs: The Badgers won last year's East-West Match Play in dramatic fashion. After Klongland's 20-foot birdie putt on the 20th hole of the deciding match against Kentucky propelled UW into the championship match, Nat Zeng pulled out the deciding match with some clutch shots on the 18th hole to give Wisconsin the victory.
3. Last Time Out: UW tied for fifth place at the 14-team Minnesota Invitational. Curtis led the way, tying for 10th with a 5-under par total that included tying her career best with a 68 in the final round. Klongland and Harkins also finished in red numbers, tying for 19th place at 1-under par.
4. Unique setup: The East-West Match Play will follow a format used at the NCAA championships. The teams will play 36 holes of stroke play featuring a shotgun start on Sunday to determine the team seedings. The top four teams will advance to the championship bracket while the other four will make up the consolation bracket. Monday will feature matches between the No. 1 and No. 4 seeds and No. 2 and No. 3 seeds going off the first hole starting at 9 a.m. The matches between the No. 5 and No. 8 and No. 6 and No. 7 teams will tee off at hole 10. The winners of those matches will square off on Tuesday, as will the losing teams.
5. All in the family: Hahn may be making her Badger debut but she won't be the first in her family to play competitively at University Ridge. Her brother, Jordan, is a junior on the men's team and one of the top golfers in the Big Ten. Last week he tied the UW record for lowest score at University Ridge, shooting a 67 in the first round of the Badger Invitational on his way to a share of 15th place.
Stricker, the Badgers' other individual, is the daughter of U.S. President's Cup captain Steve Stricker.Â
