Badgers defeat Oregon to advance to East-West championship

UW looks to win back-to-back match play titles
MADISON, Wis. – Last year, the Wisconsin women's golf team used some 18th-hole magic on its run to the East-West Match Play Challenge title. In Monday's semifinal match against Oregon at University Ridge Golf Course, the Badgers needed no such dramatics.
UW won the first two matches, with seniors Aya Johnson and Becky Kongland closing out their opponents before the final hole. Johnson, who won four of the first six holes and led throughout the match, sank a 30-foot putt on the 17th green for birdie to win the match 2 and 1. Klongland never trailed in her match either, making a birdie on No. 16 to give her a 4 and 2 victory.
After senior Gabby Curtis fell on the 17th hole of her match, classmate Lexi Harkins clinched the Badgers' spot in the championship match with a 3 and 2 win on the 16th hole. Harkins won the first two holes of the match and led throughout.Â
The most dramatic match of the day was the Badgers' last one. Junior Jessica Reinecke was two down with three holes to play. After winning hole 16, she sunk a clutch birdie putt from 10 feet to bring the match all square. It stayed that way through five extra holes. On the sixth hole, Reinecke finally prevailed.
The Badgers will face Iowa State in tomorrow's East-West Match Play Challenge championship match starting at 8:30 a.m. The Cyclones defeated Ohio State in Monday's other semifinal match.
Sophomore Bobbi Stricker and freshman Mackenzie Hahn squared off in the individual portion of the match play with Stricker winning on the first playoff hole.
