Ruble into semifinals, remaining three in position to advance
SARASOTA, Fla. -- September 24 started the week-long races of the 2017 FISA World Rowing Championships for four Badgers: Ben Ruble, Grace Latz, Sophia Vitas and Dariush Aghai. Racing is taking place in Sarasota and Bradenton, Florida.
The World Rowing Championships are taking place in the United States for the first time since 1994, when Indianapolis played host to the event.
Ben Ruble started things off this past Sunday by bowing the men's four without coxswain in Heat 3 to a fifth-place finish with a time of 6:04.68. With this finish, in the fastest head of the event, the USA boat along with five others would head to repechages earlier today.
In this single rep, the top three finishers would advance to Semifinal A/B while the remaining crews would go directly to Final C. Ruble and the rest of the USA boat cruised to a second-place finish, racing faster than they did in the heats with a time of 5:57.01.
Ruble next races in Semi A/B 1 from the outside in lane 1 on Thursday, Sept. 28, which will begin at 9:11 a.m. (CT)
Following Ruble, Grace Latz and Sophia Vitas sitting in seven seat and five seat, respectively, raced in the women's eight in Heat 1. USA and the two Badgers finished second with a time of 6:09.41 after closing in on top finisher New Zealand in the last 250 meters, making an exciting race.
Vitas and Latz will race again in the repechage on September 28 at 10:51 a.m. in lane 3. The top four finishers in this race will advance to Final A to join New Zealand and Romania, while the remaining two crews head to Final B.
Soon after the women's eight heats, in the last race of the day, Dariush Aghai bowed the men's eight to second place in Heat 2. Aghai and USA's time of 5:30.380 was just a second behind Germany and a second ahead of Romania. Aghai and the USA men's eight will race in Repechage 2 on Thursday at 11:11 a.m. from lane 3. The top two finishers in these two Reps will go on to race in Final A with Germany and Italy, while the remaining boats will race in Final B.Â
