UW heads to Iowa City for premier indoor competition

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's track and field team is heading to Iowa City, Iowa this weekend for the second-annual Larry Wieczorek Invitational. The invite will take place at the recently-renovated UI Recreation Building that features the track from the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

1. IN IOWA: The second-annual Larry Wieczorek Invite will mark the first time that the Badgers have made an appearance at the meet. The Badgers will face Florida State, LSU, Kansas State, Iowa, Iowa State, Virginia, and Arizona at the two-day meet.
The meet also features many professional athletes, including former UW standout and 2016 Olympian Zach Ziemek, who will compete in the heptathlon.
2. THROWING IT DOWN: Last weekend at The Dual, the Wisconsin throwers saw success, as senior Riley Budde won the weight throw event with a throw of 66 feet, 9 1/2 inches with teammate sophomore Tucker Wedig close behind, throwing 64-8 1/2, a PR. Senior Josh McDonald also won the shot put event, throwing 57-7.
3. GOING THE DISTANCE: Wisconsin distance runners also saw success at The Dual last weekend, as UW won titles in the 800 meters, mile and 3000 meters against Minnesota. Junior Eric Brown II won the 800 meters in 1 minutes, 51.55 seconds while sophomore Ollie Hoare won the mile with a time of 4 minutes, 13.94 seconds. Senior Joe Hardy won the 3000 meters, finishing in 8:26.95.
4. LAST TIME IN IOWA This marks UW's second-ever trip to the UI Recreation Building for a meet, as the Badgers competed in the Black and Gold Premier meet last year in Iowa City. Junior Trent Nytes excelled in the heptathlon after jumping a personal-best 23-4 ½ (7.12 m) in the long jump and winning both the shot put and high jump to finish runner-up in the heptathlon with a PR of 5,466 points, Junior Alex Teague also captured a victory in the 200 meters, crossing the line in 22.07, marking his first collegiate win.
5. BIG APPLE BOUND: After this weekend's Iowa City meet, the Badgers are headed to New York City for the Dr. Sander Invitational on Friday, Jan. 26, and the Columbia Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 27
