MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The newest additions to the Wisconsin men's rowing program competed in their first competition Saturday as both the novice eight and four boats raced in the North Star Regatta in Minneapolis. 

The Wisconsin A and B boats claimed the top two spots in the novice eights race, with UW's A team crossing the finish line first with a time of 15 minutes, 14 seconds. Wisconsin's B boat finished about 30 seconds behind with a 15:41 time. 

Minnesota's A boat and the Badgers' C boat rounded out the top four in the event, clocking in at 16:57 and 17:43, respectively. 

In the novice four, Wisconsin's A, B and C teams earned the top three spots. The A boat notched the winning time with a 16 minute, 50 second finish.

"I thought everyone raced pretty well for only the second time they've rowed by all eight and for it being their first time ever in a coxed four. I look for trends or comparisons every time we do anything that's timed. We were at this race last year and relative to those times, comparable to our competitors and our frosh from last year, we did slightly better. Novice depth seems to be pretty good and our recruits are stronger as well. A lot of people will ask these guys how it went out there for their first time racing in college. You never want to hear them say it felt good, or it felt fast. They have no concept of that at this point. None of them do. However, one of the guys in the Wisconsin E 4+, made up of four guys who have only rowed for about five weeks said, "it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be."  That is an appropriate response after your first race; and I would say that summed up the day for us."
