Badgers head west for elite two-day regatta
MADISON, Wis. —  After opening the spring campaign with a battle against Syracuse last weekend, the No. 14 Wisconsin men's rowing team is due for another challenge this weekend as they travel west for the 2019 Stanford Invitational in Redwood Shores, California.
ABOUT THE RACE: A two-day regatta hosted in Redwood Shores, California, the Stanford Invitational consistently features several of college rowing's top teams. This tournament's crop of talent features No. 4 Â Cal, No. 13 Stanford, No. 18 Oregon State, and UC Davis, among others.
All three of the Badgers' varsity eight crews will open the weekend with races against Oregon State before taking on the Cal eights in the afternoon portion of the regatta. Wisconsin will close out the invitational Sunday with races against tournament host Stanford.
REWIND: The Badgers experienced both success and challenges at last year's invitational. On opening day, Wisconsin went 0-for-3 against then-No. 1 Cal, and the varsity eight dropped a close race to Stanford's top boat. Despite these setbacks, however, the Badgers' second and third varsity eights handily won their heats against the Cardinal, and UW rebounded on the final day of racing to earn a convincing sweep over Oregon State.
RANKED: After falling to Syracuse last weekend in Skokie, Illinois, the Badgers dropped three places to No. 14 Â in the IRA/USRowing Varsity Eight Coaches' Poll this week. Yale and Washington continue to command the top two spots, respectively, and four of the six teams heading to this weekend's invitational are ranked among the top 25. Wisconsin began this season ranked 11th.
AT HOME: Â While the varsity eights travel to California, the Badgers' remaining varsity and novice rowers are set to host Minnesota and Milwaukee School of Engineering for morning races on Lake Mendota this Saturday. Racing is slated to begin at 8 a.m. (CT). If rowing conditions near Porter Boathouse are unfavorable, races will be delayed one hour and will take place out of Marshall Park.
