Akindele knocks home game-winner in double overtime against Ohio State on Senior Day
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's soccer team knows all there is to know about overtime and late-game heroics. Wisconsin picked up another thrilling win on Sunday afternoon against Ohio State at the McClimon Complex, 1-0 in double overtime. The Badgers' win today marks the most conference wins in school history.
Freshman Andrew Akindele wouldn't't take no for an answer. After volleying five shots at the Ohio State net and failing to connect on any of them, the young gun finally got the breakthrough he wanted. It came with one minute and 17 seconds left in double overtime. Akindele fired a shot that got blocked by the Buckeye keeper but stuck with it and finished off his own effort to give Wisconsin the 1-0 win.
Sunday's match against the Buckeyes was Senior Day for three special Badgers: Morten Lamps, David Fiflis, and captain Isaac Schlenker. Wisconsin celebrated their illustrious careers with a short ceremony after the match.
Straight from the pitch:
Head coach John Trask
"Congratulations to all three seniors and the role they have played at this University and for this program. We have the most wins ever in the history of the University in the Big Ten. We found that extra little push at the end today that gave us the win. Fabulous turn by Andrew and great effort to finish off his own shot. We have young and hungry front runners."
"Compliment to Ohio State and their coaching staff for their tremendous effort today. They fought to an extreme degree today."
"We're excited to get out here and host in Big Ten tournament play".
Up Next: Wisconsin now moves into postseason play, with seeding's and brackets for the Big Ten Tournament being released soon.
