MADISON, Wis. – Two goals, one assist for a total of five points of your first career start. Yes, that will certainly earn you Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors. Freshman
Noah Melick tabbed the accolade after a five-point showing against Rutgers on Sunday, the league announced Tuesday.
Melick is the first offensive player of the week since MLS First-Round Draft Pick
Chris Mueller earned the nod last season.
The Illinois native started the week firing off four shots, including three shots on goal, against Milwaukee on Wednesday night, preparing him for what was going to be a monster game on Sunday.
Melick was unstoppable against the Scarlet Knights on Sunday, launching three total shots, two of which ended up being goals that led Wisconsin to a 4-2 victory.
In the first half, he stole the ball from a Rutgers defender and fired from a ways out, connecting with the back of the net. A few minutes into the second half, Melick sent a ball wide and made a phenomenal run on goal, receiving the ball, beating the keeper to the left corner of the net. But the freshman wasn't done participating in Wisconsin scoring plays. He put an absolute dime on a rope through to another Wisconsin freshman forward,
Andrew Akindele, who simply had to gather and fire for another Wisconsin goal.
UW is back in action against Green Bay on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
