MADISON, Wis. - Following a dominant first-round win over Memphis in the opening game of the NCAA Tournament, Wisconsin women's soccer (13-3-4 overall, 6-2-3 Big Ten) is primed and ready to take on Hofstra University (16-5-1, 6-2-1 Colonial Athletic Association) in the second round, this Friday evening at Cagan Stadium in Palo Alto, California.
1. ROUND ONE ROMP: Fueled by stellar defensive play, incredible goalkeeping and three goals from three different athletes, UW had Memphis' number the entire night. Keeper Jordyn Bloomer saw six shots on goal and saved them all, posting her first career shutout in the NCAA Tournament. The unique trio of forward Dani Rhodes, midfielder Maia Cella and forward Cameron Murtha stepped up for Wisconsin with each player netting a goal.Â

Murtha opened up scoring in the 26th minute of the game, giving UW a 1-0 lead entering the second half. Once a new 45 hit the clock, Rhodes and Cella were eager to participate, with Rhodes scoring in the 55th and Cella in the 61st. The Badgers outshot Memphis 14-9 and had an 11-2 corner advantage.
2. POINTS UPDATE: Murtha and Rhodes continue to sit tied for second place in points for the Badgers, both forwards just two behind fellow forward Lauren Rice. Rhodes now has 14 points from six goals and two assists while Murtha has 14 points on five goals and four assists. Rice enters round two with 16 points from seven goals and two assists.
3. SCOUTING HOFSTRA: Sitting at 16-5-1 overall and possessing a 2018 conference championship, Hofstra is entering round two of the NCAA Tournament on an eight-game unbeaten streak. Beginning with a tie back in early October against William & Mary, the Pride of Hofstra has won seven matches since, including four shutouts and a 4-1 upset over No. 22 seed Boston College in the first round. Hofstra made slight work of its opponents in the CAA conference tournament, defeating Delaware in the quarterfinals, 1-0, Northeastern in the semifinals, 1-0 and James Madison in the championship 2-0.
Sabrina Bryan and Lucy Porter lead the way for Hofstra in terms of points. Bryan has 30 points on the season from 13 goals and four assists on 65 shots. Porter comes in second with 26 points on 11 goals and four assists on 58 shots.
4. NCAA HISTORY: This is the first time Wisconsin will compete against Hofstra in program history, making it consecutive games for the Badgers in which they've played teams never before seen. This season is also the third year in a row, and fourth time in the past four appearances, where Wisconsin has advanced to the second round of the tournament.Â
In 2014, UW competed against Central Florida, losing 3-2. In 2016 the Badgers met Florida and lost 3-2 in double overtime and last season Wisconsin met No. 1 seed South Carolina and was defeated 1-0.
