Tysoe claims Big Ten best in losing effort to Purdue and Tennessee

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin swimming and diving team completed its double dual with Tennessee and Purdue with plenty of improvement and a number of exceptional individual performances.

"Today was a great learning experience for our program," head coach Yuri Suguiyama said. "We walked away with a lot to improve upon as we get ready for Austin."

Paving the way for the 14th-ranked UW women, juniors Megan Doty and Beata Nelson each notched wins on the day.

Doty squeaked out a victory in the 200-yard individual medley by two hundredths of a second (2:00.60). The junior also grabbed third in the 200 butterfly (57.87).

Nelson won the 200 backstroke handily with a time of 1:54.95. The Madison native also claimed a third-place finish in the 200 free (1:50.37).

Senior Jess Unicomb took second in both the 100-yard backstroke (54.07) and 200-yard backstroke (1:58.87).

Senior Grace Tierney finished the 1000-yard freestyle with a second-place time of 10:09.24. She would also touch third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:51.40.

"I thought Grace Tierney and Jess Unicomb raced really well today," Suguiyama said.

Despite these efforts, UW fell to No. 24 Tennessee, 206.5-92.5, as well as Purdue, 155-140.

On the men's side, it was MJ Mao who led the way for the 24th-ranked Badgers. The sophomore capped his day with two victories, one in the 100-yard butterfly (48.60) and another in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.67).

Fresh off his Big Ten Swimmer of the Week nod following his last action, junior Cam Tysoe notched a victory and a Big Ten-leading mark in the 200-yard backstroke (1:45.14).

"Cam Tysoe and MJ Mao raced with some toughness and maturity today," Suguiyama said.

Still, the Badgers were handed a defeat for the first time this season, losing to No. 15 Tennessee, 204-96, and No. 25 Purdue, 162.5-136.5.

The Badgers will be back in action at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Nov. 28 – Dec. 1.
