Duo led No. 1 Badgers to sweep of Mavericks
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin women's hockey juniors Mekenzie Steffen and Kristen Campbell were named WCHA Defenseman of the Week and WCHA Goaltender of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
It marks the second time this year Steffen has received WCHA accolades while it's the first time that Campbell, the reigning WCHA Goaltender of the Year, has received a weekly honor.
Steffen assisted on three of UW's four goals in its sweep of Minnesota State. Steffen's three assists were not only the most by a WCHA defenseman, but tied for the NCAA lead among blueliners.
The Centerville, Minnesota native recorded a pair of assists in UW's 2-1 win on Friday before assisting on Abby Roque's game-winning goal in Saturday's 2-0 triumph. Friday's game marked the second time that Steffen has enjoyed a multi-assist game this year and the junior is more than halfway to her career of 16 points set last year.
Campbell allowed only one goal in the No. 1 Badgers' sweep of Minnesota State last weekend on the road. Campbell stopped 31 of the 32 shots she faced and earned her second shutout of the year in UW's 2-0 win on Saturday.
A native of Brandon, Manitoba, Campbell posted a WCHA-best .969 save percentage on the weekend while her 0.50 GAA was also a league-best. Both marks were in the top-10 in the NCAA last week.
The top-ranked Badgers are idle this weekend before hosting Bemidji State, Nov. 16-17, at LaBahn Arena.
