Pankowski becomes third No. 1 draft pick in school history
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin women's hockey seniors Annie Pankowski, Sophia Shaver and Emily Clark were selected in the 2018 NWHL Draft on Wednesday and Thursday.
Pankowski was the draft's top pick as the Laguna Hills, California, native was selected by the Metropolitan Riveters, while Shaver was picked ninth by the Minnesota Whitecaps. UW was one of only two schools with multiple players drafted in the first two rounds. Clark was picked by the Boston Pride in the third round and was the 15th overall selection.
Pankowski is the third UW student-athlete to be picked first overall in the draft of their respective sport's professional league, joining former teammate Lauren Williams, who was the top pick in the 2018 Canadian Women's Hockey League Draft, and Rose Lavelle, who was picked first in the 2017 National Women's Soccer League Draft.
Pankowski leads the Badgers in goals this year with 14 and enters the holiday break on a seven-game goal streak, the third-longest streak in program history. A two-time Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award Top-10 Finalist, the forward ranks in the top-10 in program history in goals, assists, points, plus/minus and shots on goal and is tied for the school record with eight career shorthanded goals. She is slated to join a Riveters' roster that includes five former Badgers including Erika Lawler, Jenny Ryan, Courtney Burke, Madison Packer and Kelly Nash.
A native of Wayzata, Minnesota, Shaver was the Whitecap's second-ever draft pick. Shaver has nine points off four goals and five assists and has a point in six of UW's last eight games. The forward was an All-WCHA Second-Team selection her junior year after recording 24 points from 12 goals and 12 assists. Shaver is set to become the first Badger to suit up for the Whitecaps, who are currently in their first season in the NWHL.
A 2018 Olympian, Clark has 13 points in 13 games for the Badgers this year off six goals and seven assists. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, native has 21 career game-winning goals, which rank fourth in program history. Clark is a two-time All-WCHA selection and has also been named to the WCHA Final Faceoff All-Tournament team twice in her Badger career. She also has a wide array of experience with the Canadian National Team as she has represented Canada at the Olympics, Four Nations Cups and the IIHF World Championships.
