MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's basketball team (7-2) heads north to Green Bay for their second in-state rival game taking on the Green Bay Phoenix, Saturday at 1 p.m., from the Kress Center.
Â
1. LAST TIME OUT: The Badgers opened the month of December by corralling Marshall, 67-49, Tuesday night at the Kohl Center. UW shined in the second quarter, grabbing its first lead of the game (19-18) on a 3-pointer from junior Suzanne Gilreath with 7:08 left in the half. Wisconsin continued its upward trend using a 7-0 run over 1:01 to up their lead to 30-20 with 2:47 to play in the half. UW outscored the Herd in second quarter, 21-10, to lead 34-23 at the break.
2. BEYOND THE ARC:Â Â UW shot a season-high eight 3-pointers versus Marshall. Gilreath contributed half of those, shooting 4-for-7 beyond the arc. Senior Kelly Karlis added two more with a perfect 2-for-2 from 3-point range. Freshman Alex Luehring and sophomore Niya Beverley rounded up the last two with one 3-pointer each.
3. DOMINATE THE GLASS: Wisconsin dominated off the glass, outrebounding the Herd, 68-42, which led to 21 second-chance points. This is the seventh game the Badgers outrebounded their opponent this season.
Â
4. IN-STATE RIVALRY:Â UW leads the all-time series 20-14 over the Phoenix and leads the series held in Green Bay 9-6. But the Phoenix have recently had a strong showing winning seven of the last nine matchups only losing once in overtime, 65-61, in 2013, and once by one point, 54-53, in 2016.
Â
5. SCOUTING THEÂ PHOENIX:Â Last season Green Bay (29-4 in 2017-18 campaign) led the Horizon League conference and went on to play in the first round of the NCAA tournament. This season the Phoenix have already taken down the No. 16 ranked team, Missouri, 56-49, in November, but most recently, the Phoenix (3-4) dropped a defensive battle to South Dakota, 55-49.
Â
Green Bay is led by Frankie Wurtz averaging 11.9 points per game and Madison Wolf with 7.1 rebounds per game.
