1. HOARE DOES IT AGAIN: Sophomore Ollie Hoare rewrote the record books for the second time in two weeks after he broke his previous personal record in the invite section of the 3000 meters at the Iowa State Classic on Friday. Hoare crossed the line in 7 minutes, 51.69 seconds, not only securing a fifth place overall finish in the event, but also moving up to tie former Badger Chris Solinsky for the No. 5 spot on the program's top-10 list in the 3000 meters.
2. LAST TIME AT THE SHELL SHOCKER: At last year's Shell Shocker meet, the Badgers picked up wins in five different events as well as collected a slew of personal bests. Senior Riley Budde had a standout performance in the weight throw, winning the event with a toss of 72 feet, 11 1/4 inches (22.23m), which ranks second in program history. Fellow senior Tim Guthrie also picked up a win in the pole vault, where he broke his previous personal record with a leap of 16-5 1/2 (5.02m).
On the track, senior Corbin Ellis won the 400 meters with a PR of 48.14, while senior Lorenzo Larry dominated the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.81. The Badgers also swept the podium in the mile run, as senior Carl Hirsch took the crown with a run of 4:10.14 while teammates Cooper Barth, Ryan Clevenger, and McKena Ramos took the next three spots.
3. SETTING RECORDS IN AMES: Many different Badgers picked up personal bests at last weekend's meet. Senior Joe Hardy ran a personal best of 13:51.06 in the invite section of the 5000 meters, just barely missing out on a spot on UW's top-10 performance list. Four other Badgers earned PR's in the 5000 meters, as Tyson Miehe came in at 14:05.74, Ben Eidenschink in 14:05.84, Zack Benning with 14:18.54, and freshman Noah Jacobs with a time of 14:24.34.
4. FROM THE COACH: "This is the weekend where basically the team is picked for Big Tens, with the exception of five or six kids of both genders that are in the bubble. We've given their coaches standards that they have to make, and let's go get them. The opportunity's there, it's a competition, so go chase those times," said Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Mick Byrne. "The only thing for some of our kids this weekend is to stay healthy and not get hurt. For others, it's that opportunity, one more competition before Big Tens to get on the bus."
5. NEXT IS BIG TENS: After the Shell Shocker, the Badgers will enter competition season, as they are set to attend the Big Ten Indoor Championship meet in Geneva, Ohio next weekend. The two-day meet will be held at the SPIRE Institute and is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Friday morning.
BONUS: The Badgers will be sending a distance medley relay squad to the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame on Saturday after the Shell Shocker. The relay will feature Corbin Ellis, Oliver Hoare, Joe Hardy, and Eric Brown, and is slated to begin at noon.
"The guys have, even back in the fall, been talking about putting together a real distance medley," Byrne said. "This opportunity at Notre Dame presented itself, and the guys want to do it, they want to give it a shot. There's no harm if they go, and if they run an NCAA time, that's awesome, and if they don't, then we gave it a shot.
"That's what life's about, taking the opportunity and running with it, and hopefully it'll run in their favor."
