Badgers host 14 schools in the desert
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin women's golf team will compete for the second time this spring, hosting the Westbrook Invitational in Peoria, Arizona, Sunday and Monday, Feb. 25-26, at the Westbrook Village Golf Club.
Here are five things to know before the invitational:
1. Last time out: The Badgers wrapped up their first match of the spring by tying for fourth place out of 16 teams at the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Florida. UW was led by seniors Becky Klongland and Lexi Harkins, each of whom placed among the top 25 individuals.
2. Showdown in the desert: UW takes on Delaware, No. 15 Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, No. 17 Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, UC Davis, and Washington State this weekend.
3. Fearsome Fivesome: The Badgers will travel the dominant starting five lineup of seniors Gabby Curtis, Lexi Harkins, Aya Johnson, Becky Klongland, and junior Jessica Reinecke to Arizona this coming Sunday. So far, that group has played in every match of the 2017-18 season together. They'll be joined by freshman Claire Fitzgerald and junior Nat Zeng, who will play as individuals.
4. First Timers: Head coach Todd Oehrlein announced the Badgers will see two new faces competing in Arizona this weekend. "Nat Zeng and Claire Fitzgerald will both be playing in their first tournament of the season. Claire is a freshman and Nat is coming back from an elbow surgery in the fall. Both are doing well and I look forward to having them out on the golf course with us this weekend."
5. Thoughts from Coach Oehrlein: "We have an excellent field at Westbrook. It's a great opportunity for our team and we've had very good practices since we've returned for the spring. UCF was a solid start for us and we'll need to build upon what we saw. We'll need to improve our execution on par 5's this weekend."
